The 21st Flora Expo 2018 has been expected to kick off on April 13, 2018, at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. The expo is expected to last till 16th of April.
Floriculture Association of Nepal (FAN) is the main organizer of the 21st Flora Expo 2018. The main motive of this four-day expo is to promote commercial flower production and sales in Nepal. The expo is being conducted with the main slogan of “Clean Environment and Economic Prosperity through Floriculture.”
FAN Vice President and coordinator of the 21st Flora Expo 2018, Ramji Prasad Timilsina said, “The Flora expo will be useful for flower entrepreneurs, consumers, and enthusiasts. It will be a key event to promote floriculture in Nepal.”
According to the FAN, the expo will feature 82 stalls, out of which, 65 will be floral stalls and 10 will be official FAN stalls. The remaining stalls comprise of four stalls dedicated to landscaping, one stall for the competitive exhibition, and two food stalls.
The 21st Flora Expo 2018 will also feature a competition with various categories with the winners getting cash prizes, plaques, and certificates. The categories for the competition are:
- Best Seasonal Flower
- Decorative Plant
- Blossoming Flower
- Landscape
- Flower Decoration
- Stall
- Cut Flower (Rose)
- Cut Flower (Carnation)
- Cut Flower (Gerbera)
- Cut Flower (Gladiolus)
Cut flowers are especially useful for decorative purposes at home, offices, hotels, and resorts. Urban and affluent individuals also tend to buy them to offer as gifts during birthdays and marriages or any other special occasion as well.
The President of FAN, Mr. Kumar Kasaju Shrestha said that the expo was an important medium to help the floriculture business in Nepal. He said, “Besides Kathmandu Valley, FAN also organizes various flora expos in different places such as Butwal, Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, and Pokhara to help the floriculture business grow.” He further added, “Despite challenges, we organize various programs such as expos, seminars, and discussions relevant to floriculture business in our country.”
The most popular flowers sold in the market are marigold, gladiolus, rose, tuberose, carnation, gerbera and orchid. Besides the Tihar festival, flower sales jump steeply during Valentine’s Day on February 14.
FAN was the main organizer at the 3rd International Flora Expo 2017 last year. The expo was a huge success with over 65,000 visitors and the expo observed a total transaction worth over NPR. 7.5 million.
This year, at 21st Flora Expo 2018, the organizers are expecting over 60,000 footfall and observe transaction up to NPR. 6.5 million.
