KMC to Introduce Digital Parking Service in Kathmandu

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is planning to introduce Digital Parking Service in Kathmandu within the coming four months. The digital parking service would be provided in New Road and Durbarmarg areas.

Chief Executive Officer at KMC, Yadav Prasad Koirala said that they had completed their study and would soon invite a tender to develop the project.

In New Road area, the digital parking service would be built along the Aakash Bhairab-Bishal Bazar-RB Complex street. Likewise, in Durbarmarg, the proposed parking facility would be built on either side of the street.

Digital Parking Service is a system where people can book parking space and pay for the service. The booking and payment process will be done via a mobile app. To use the service of digital parking, one must register their vehicles. With this plan to introduce digital parking service in Kathmandu, the KMC expects to reduce the problem of parking space hoarding at the Capital’s busiest streets—New Road and Durbarmarg.

The chief of Public-Private Partnership division of the KMC, Mahesh Kafle said, “If you visit these areas, parking space is hard to find. This is because many people have been found parking their vehicles throughout the day. Once we adopt the new system, a person will not be allowed to occupy a parking space for hours on end because there will be a record of parking duration.”

The Information Technology companies are also very positive about creating such mobile app to support the KMC’s plan. Four IT firms have already expressed their interests in developing the app for the project.

Not only the digital parking service, the KMC is also looking forward to building a multi-stored parking facility on an 890 sq meter property at Dharmapath in New Road. KMC Mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya announced the plan during the 23rd anniversary of the KMC last year.

The KMC has always been trying to provide different facilities through different initiations. Some plans have succeeded and some have not. However, we hope the plan to bring out digital parking service in Kathmandu gets a good response from the citizens and this might help reduce the issue of lack of parking areas in Kathmandu.
