The meditative nature of gardening helps enable the parasympathetic system to take over, which reduces your overall stress, Romine says. Gardening gives you pleasure and keeps you active and busy. In a world full of pollution and problems, seeing beautiful flowers and plants can be a great relief.

If you don’t have access to a garden or don’t feel like pulling weeds, Romine recommends coloring. It produces a similar meditative response and is great for relaxation.
