9th Human Rights Magna Meet 2017 to kick off on December 9

9th Human Rights Magna Meet 2017 is going to be held on December 9 in the capital, Kathmandu. The Magna meet will be a three-day event.

December 10th is observed as the International Human Rights Day. Every year people celebrate the Human Rights Day with ecstasy and jollity.

Bidya Devi Bhandari, President of Nepal, is scheduled to inaugurate the 9th Human Rights Magna Meet 2017.

At a press meet on December 5th, the Magna meet coordinator Lily Thapa said, “The event would evaluate the status of country’s human rights and discuss how to strengthen it in a new federal set-up.”

Though the constitution has guaranteed the rights of people from all walks of life, rules are yet to be formulated in regard to the implementation of youth and women rights.”

According to Thapa, political parties still seem unwilling to bring women’s rights into practice. She expected to support and cooperation from every sector to make the event successful.

Coordinator of the National Human Rights Magna Meet and rights defender, Suni Lama complained that although the changed political system has tried to make the human rights reachable to the people in harmony with the time, the human rights provisions required in the constitution have not been effectively implemented yet due to some technical reasons.

The National Human Rights Commission and the Human Rights Magna Meet Organizing Main Committee had been jointly organizing this event since the last eight years.

This year, the Magna Meet is going to be coordinated by Women’s Alliance for Peace, Justice and Democracy, Sankalpa, and Youth Advocacy Nepal.

The 9th Human Rights Magna Meet 2017 will be held on the occasion of 69th International Human Rights Day at Dilibazar which is based on Nepal Cultural Association with the theme “equal opportunities for youths and women: a base for prosperity and development.”
