YouTube Privatizes Dislike Counts to protect Creators from “Dislike Attacks”

YouTube made an official announcement yesterday regarding the Dislike feature provided on the platform. As per the announcement, the dislike count will now be private across YouTube and only the creators themselves can view the dislike counts on their backend dashboard.

This change has been enrolled to ensure that YouTube promotes positivity and respectful interactions between viewers and creators. YouTube believes that the change will provide better protection to the creators from receiving the “dislike attacks” when groups form and gang up to increase the dislike counts on a video.  YouTube also said that it had also heard from smaller creators and others who were just getting started on the platform that they felt unfairly targeted by dislike attacks.

The dislike button is staying and only the dislike counts will be visible to the creator himself. Users can still dislike a certain video, only the dislike counts will be visible to the creators on their backend. This change is expected to gradually extent globally starting yesterday across all screen sizes.

YouTube is a platform where creators have a voice and an opportunity to reach out to a wide range of audiences across the globe. And we also believe it is YouTube’s responsibility to make sure the platform is safe and secure for all. We hope the privatization of dislike counts creates an inclusive and respectful environment where everyone can feel safe and express themselves openly.
