The End of Yahoo Messenger after 20 Years

Yahoo announced the end of Yahoo messenger after 20 years. Yahoo messenger will shut down on 17th of July. After 20 years of connecting friends, family and random people from all over the world, the iconic Yahoo Messenger will bid farewell to its fans next month.

“We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind,” according to the Yahoo website. “As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”

Yahoo is not offering a replacement for Messenger at this time, but the site did say that it has launched an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel in beta. Interested users can request an invite at squirrel.yahoo.com.

Yahoo reminds its users that they can download their chat history to their personal computer or device through the end of November this year. First, they have to go to the download request site and sign in. After selecting a verification method, users need to enter the Account Key sent to them. Then click download and wait for the file to be sent to your e-mail. To do so, you can click here.

The website also states that the termination of Yahoo Messenger will not affect its other services like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Fantasy and more.

Yahoo recommends deleting the app after you’ve downloaded your chat history and any other information you’d like to save, according to the website. Ending Messenger support will not impact any user’s Yahoo ID, which will continue to work for Yahoo Mail and other products. Organizations looking for an alternative for group messaging can check out Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Yahoo Squirrel.

The Yahoo Messenger users have time until July 17th to get their fix of Yahoo Messenger, as they will not be able to access their chats after that, states Yahoo on its website.
