Traffic Police to Introduce Road Test for Driving License

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Department (MTPD) said it will create a new rule for those seeking driving license— road test for driving license after they pass the existing written test and trial.

The MTPD in association with the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) is planning to introduce the road test for driving license rule within two months, according to MTPD Chief, Mingmar Lama.

According to the DoTM, as many as 500 people take driving test for license. And according to Traffic Police, there are over 828, 000 vehicles in the Kathmandu valley.

The road test for driving license will be conducted in different places: Jorpati to Gokarneshwar, Machhapokhari to Kakani, Balkhu to Chobar, Narayan Gopal Chowk to Budanilkantha, and Bhaktapur to Banepa road sections.

Mingmar Lama said, “We will have separate desks in various places. Our officials will ask people to follow instructions and they must pass the road test to acquire a driving license.” He further said that after passing the road trial, they would have to attend an hour-long “traffic awareness class”.

Meanwhile, the traffic police are really concerned about the rising pollution in the Kathmandu valley. And that is why the traffic police have announced that vehicles en route to the Capital must get washed before entering the Valley. For this, the traffic police have said the wash centers would be set up at different places where vehicles can pay and get washed before entering.

Lama said, “The rule to wash vehicles before entering the valley will be implemented after three months.”

According to the traffic police, such wash centers will be set up in various places including Balaju, Nagdhunga, Dakshinkali, etc.

However, the announcement has met with criticism in the valley, with some ridiculing the move, saying the move doesn’t really make sense at all.

So, what do you guys think about the new rules—road test for driving license and washing vehicles before entering the valley? Do you think it will ease things out for people in Kathmandu valley? Let us know through the comments.
