Poem Marathon

POEM Marathon to kick off on April 22

YOUthVote Nepal, a collective campaign of youth organizations, is hosting POEM Marathon at Basantapur Durbar Square on April 22.

The event is an open poem citation where interested youths can cite their poems focusing on the theme of Youth Leadership, Election, and Youth Candidacy.

The YOUthVote Nepal campaign was launched about a month ago to carry out advocacy on youths’ agendas during the upcoming local elections. As part of the campaign, memorandums have been submitted to various political parties to promote youth and women leadership for the upcoming local level elections, and not to mobilize school children during the electioneering.

The campaigners have also been on delegations to National Human Rights Commission, Election Commission, and Central Child Welfare Board. Along with these activities, the campaigners have also staged a street play to raise awareness to the public about the local election. The play performed by a group of theatre artists in Basantapur was themed on why youths should vote and showed that the present chaotic situation in Nepal is not the result of our politicians only, but the voters too, by not voting the right people.

So, focusing the current situation of politics in Nepal and the local election happening from May 14 this year, YOUthVote Nepal has come across with the idea to portray it through poetry.

According to YOUthVote Nepal, there are few rules to be followed while participating in the POEM Marathon:

  • You are not allowed to cite poems against any politician or political parties.
  • The poems must be written by the participants themselves.
  • The poems should not be too long.

If you are also interested in writing poems and want to share it with everyone, then this is the perfect event for you to join the other poets and help raise public awareness about the election.
