The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has officially started the production of biogas from waste from yesterday, following a long test production.
KMC officials said that the domestic waste collected from two wards (12 and 19) from the KMC will be used for generating biogas on the first phase of the project. The project is a part of the Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management Project that has the total joint investment of NPR. 18.2 million of the KMC and European Union (EU).
Under the project of generating biogas from waste that started around four years ago, 300 kilograms organic fertilizer, 14 kilowatts electricity, and 13,500 liters water will be produced on a daily basis from the total of three metric tons of organic materials.
Speaking at a function on the occasion of generating biogas from waste, the Mayor of KMC, Mr. Bidya Sundar Shakya shared many problems of the valley could be resolved if the waste of the city would be managed properly and fully.
He also said that it was the responsibility of the local residents to keep their house premises and surroundings neat and clean.
Similarly, deputy mayor, Hari Prabha Khadgi expressed the need for devising a sustainable waste management action plan.
The executive officer of KMC, Ishwori Raj Poudel viewed that the KMC’s campaign to utilize waste as energy should be made to materialize.
Meanwhile, the ambassador of EU to Nepal Rensje Teerink pointed out the need for making Kathmandu city known to the world as a beautiful and clean city.
