Central Zoo, a Safe Haven for Rescued Wildlife

The country’s only zoo, Central Zoo located in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur has turned into a safe haven for rescued wildlife. The animals would have slim chances of surviving if they were not to be rescued. Out of total 110 species, more than one-third of the animals were rescued. A heaven is a lovely place.

The central zoo sheltered many animals received from different foundations. The zoo’s official rescue team and several wildlife conservation centers made the first contribution in rescuing the animals.

Animals that pose a threat to the human lives, injured animals, and orphaned animals whose survival became difficult in their environments were rescued and brought to the zoo by the official rescue teams. The illegally trafficked animals were also rescued by police and brought to the central zoo.

Formerly rescued about 10 leopards were transferred to their natural habitat. Endangered animals like rhinoceros, red panda, jungle cat, and civet were also rescued by various teams, according to zoo officials.

Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police (CIB) on October 18 rescued live animals including two chimpanzees, eight Mona monkeys, seven golden pheasants, 38 speckled pigeons and 65 nanday parakeets, natives to Nigeria.

The rescued wildlife are being transformed in the central zoo.

A pair of exotic Lemur, native to the island of Madagascar, can also be seen in the zoo. The pair were rescued by the CIB, last year. The zoo also received animals that the owners failed to domesticate.

Sayuj Poudyal, a member of a rescue team of the Central zoo said, “It would be unethical to pick up animals from their natural habitat and keep them in the zoo, so we also collect animals rescued from different sources and try to give them a new life.”

Despite all the arguments, it is important to preserve the natural surroundings as most researchers proved that the balanced ecosystem plays an important role in ensuring the welfare of the humanity. Therefore, wildlife should be protected at all costs.
