Bagmati Clean-up now in Neglected Areas

The Bagmati clean-up campaign has been going on for more than 200 weeks. And now, the campaign is preparing to focus on the neglected areas of the river.

The campaign has been focusing on the same places and points of the Bagmati River since the beginning. One of the initiators of the Bagmati clean-up campaign, Dr. Raju Adhikari, who is also the coordinator of Gayatri Pariwar, said, “Now we are planning to move downstream of the Bagmati River and entrust concerned wards with regular cleaning of the river.”

He said the campaign will now focus on the Shankhamul confluence. “Downstream areas from Shankhamul remained dirty, so we are planning to focus on the area,” Dr. Adhikari added.

More than 8,000 metric tons of solid waste have been extracted from the Bagmati River so far. More than 740,000 people have participated in the Bagmati clean-up campaign since the beginning. Besides occasionally gathering for voluntarily cleaning, there is a core team of around 50 volunteers who regularly clean the Bagmati River every Saturday.

The campaign was being launched under the leadership of former Chief Secretary Leela Mani Paudyal till November last year. Paudyal was appointed as Nepali ambassador to China and the campaign is going on without leadership since then.

The campaign was launched on May 19, 2013.  And today, more than 140 groups are involved in the campaign.

  1. Everything is good about Bagmati Clean-up campaign, except the monthly sms reminder from NTC, which is a bit frustrating.
