Embossed number plate mandatory only for new vehicle

After the widespread criticism, the Department of Transport Management clarifies what kinds of vehicles need to get the embossed number plate within mid-July. The Government has said that it is mandatory only for those vehicles that are registered after November 17, 2021.

However, speaking in the press meeting, the Department of Transport Management, Director-General Namraj Ghimire has said that the embossed number plates are mandatory only for three types of vehicles.

  • First, the new vehicles that are bought after November 17, 2021, will have to install an embossed number plate by mid of July.
  • And the second-hand vehicles that are purchased after February 13 will have to install an embossed number plate.
  • Lastly, those who went for the renewal after May 15 will have to install the embossed number plate by mid-July.

Also, the transport department has accepted that it is not possible to register all the vehicles registered in the two provinces with the new number plates by mid-July. There are 2.5 million vehicles registered in the country, where about 1.7 million vehicles are registered in Bagmati Province and 300,000 in Gandaki Province. And only 25,000 vehicles have been affixed with embossed number plates so far.

How to register embossed number plate online?

Since the government wants to replace the embossed number plates with the existing ones, you might want to know about the steps for registration. Here, we will give a step-by-step guide to applying for an embossed registration place.

Step 1:

Get Started

First, you need to open the official website of the Department of Transport Management. Then, you have to click “Embossed Number Plate System” on the right side of the home page. Then, you will see “get started “ option just click the button.

Step 2:

Enter Basic Information

After that, you will see the next page where you will have to enter the information about your vehicle. Then, fill out the captcha and click ‘continue’ to go to the next page.

Step 3:

Verify

On this page, you need to enter the mobile phone number that you are currently using. After that DoTM will send you a six-digit number along with your vehicle number for verification. Then, you need to enter the code to go to the next page.

Step 4:

Verify via Email

You need to enter your email address here. You need to give a verified and active mailing address where the DoTM will provide another verification number.

However, this is optional you can just click the “skip” button if you do not want to enter your email address.

Step 5:

Provide necessary information

In this step, you need to enter the vehicle information. Here, you need to fill out the information about your vehicle from your bill book or blue book.

After filling in all the necessary information, you will be allowed to move on to the next tab. Here you have to give the information about the vehicle owner. There are two types of ownership options individual and organization. You just need to fill out the form accordingly. And also, if your vehicle is purchased on loan, you will also need to mention the name of the bank which has financed the purchase.

After you have finished filling in the owner information, you have to attach several lists of documents that are mentioned on the page. Then, press the “Next button” and it will take you to the ‘submit’ screen. You need to check all the information you have provided before clicking the ‘Submit’ button.

Step 6:

Download the application form

After you have submitted all the documents, you need to download the application. Then print it out and submit it to the Transport Management Office along with the documents.

If you think that you have made some mistake while filling out the form, then you can click the ‘apply again’ button. This way the current application will cancel and the form will open in an editable mode. Here, you can correct the information and submit it and download the application again.

Step 7:

Submit

Once you complete filling out the form, you need to submit it to the Transport Management Office along with other documents and two photos.

The two-wheeler owners can submit their applications at the Transport Management Office in Gurjudhara, Kathmandu, which will cost Rs 2,500. And the four-wheeler owners can submit their application at the Transport Management Office in Ekantakuna, Lalitpur which will cost you Rs 3,200.

The new embossed number plate will be ready within two to three working days.

Currently, this system is only in the Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.
