Career Fair 2017 – Tech Edition by Namaste Kathmandu

As the trend of international education fairs in Nepal continues to mushroom, adding to the issue of ‘brain drain’, Namaste Kathmandu hopes to counteract their effects with ‘Career Fair 2017’.

Namaste Kathmandu, a tech-based event management company, is all set to organize the one-of-a-kind career fair for IT graduates and enthusiasts. According to Amit Bajracharya, co-founder of the company, “Nepal lacks the culture of career fairs. Only a handful of colleges run such events annually when they are imperative to educating and motivating Nepali youth.”

Every year, thousands of Nepali graduates are finding solace in foreign countries for employment opportunities. According to the statistics at the Ministry of Education for 2015/16, 32,889 students have gone abroad to study whereas, in the year 2014/15, 30,696 students went abroad for the same. And the number of students going abroad is increasing by the year. Bajracharya said that the main goal of organizing Career Fair 2017 was to keep them home, develop the promising IT sector of Nepal and, eventually, Nepal itself.

Career Fair 2017 aims to act as a liaison between market-ready aspiring graduates and the booming heavyweights of the IT industry in Nepal. At Career Fair 2017, attendees can get proper career counselling from industry experts and also meet prospective employers, all under a single roof. They can get information on the latest market requirements to get a job placement and companies can finally solve the long-running trouble of talent acquisition. Thus, creating an ideal win-win situation for both the parties.

The fair is scheduled for May 6, 2017 (Baishakh 23) at Yala Maya Kendra (Dhokaima Café), Patan Dhoka. The schedule of the program is as such:

The participating companies can present their office work culture so as to attract prospective employees which can then lead to walk-in interviews. The walk-in interviews involve a session of the potential employee with the HR department of the company.

This panel discussion will be an interactive session with senior IT professionals from some of the biggest IT companies in Nepal. The session will have insightful deliberations from the experts on technology and the right skills that one needs to build a career in the IT industry.

Panel Discussion 2: IT as Career Option for Non-IT graduates

This session seeks to break the notion that non-IT individuals can’t have a career in the industry. It will focus on introducing participants to possible job options that IT industry has to offer that don’t require typical IT skills.

Panel Discussion 3: Startups and Business Sustainability: Debunking the Myths

This discussion is targeted at inexperienced youths who wish to become an entrepreneur. This session will focus on the do’s and don’ts in the journey of becoming an entrepreneur.

Panel Discussion 4: Bridging the Persistent Gaps in Academics and Market Requirement

Colleges and universities often proclaim to be working to procreate fine human resources which are market-ready. However, in reality, the gap associated with the requirements of the industry and the way the students are taught is huge. This session aims to bridge the gap between the difference in the requirements of the job market and what they are being taught.
