Celebrated on 25th of December—Christmas

Christmas is around the corner! Time off work. Gifts to give and receive. Eating and drinking as much as you like. Seeing friends, family, loved ones. The atmosphere of goodwill and cheer.

Christmas is an annual festival honoring the birth of Jesus Christ, observed on 25th of December as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. It is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the “Son of God.”

The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died and again came back to life for us. The “Christ-Mass” service was only allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had celebrated it at Midnight. So, we get the name Christ-Mass shortened to Christmas.

The Christian community can’t even imagine their existence without the December 25th celebration. In fact, this was not true at all in the earlier days; the fact is that the birth of Jesus Christ was not even celebrated. Rather, the major holiday was 6th January which was celebrated as the arrival of Magi which comes after the birth of Jesus and Easter which celebrated the reincarnation of Jesus. 25th December officially came into existence, celebrating the birth of Jesus, was in 336 A.D. in the earlier calendar of Romans.

Though most of the scholars are not so sure about the actual day of the birth of Jesus Christ still, December 25th is celebrated all across the globe as Christmas day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ.

Now it is celebrated by people all around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It is thought by most to be a wonderful time, focusing the participants on giving, family togetherness, beautiful music, and decorations, and feasting on special foods.

On December 25th, government offices, educational institutions, many businesses, and post offices are closed. If you plan to travel by public transport, check with the local transport authority on schedule changes.

Images of Santa Claus, snowmen, reindeer, and candy canes are seen in cards, posters, signs and other printed or marketing material associated with the Christmas celebrations. Images of baby Jesus, the star, and other symbols associated with the religious meaning are also seen during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
